"THE SOCIETY is alive and well and is stepping up its environmental education campaign to reduce noise from neighbours. We are deluged with pitiful appeals from victims, who are driven to desperation by noise which they are unable to stop or escape. Frustration, loss of sleep and fear of violence from the noisemakers if they complain to the authorities seriously affects their mental and physical health and reduces their efficiency. We give them information, advice and practical help. Legislation does exist, with maximum penalties of a £2,000 fine and six months imprisonment, but it is very difficult to enforce and the costs of doing so are horrendous. So we feel that the only real and lasting solution lies in persuasion and education of the public to show respect for people's rights to peace and quiet..."
